 The one I tried generated a tone above 20kHz. Just like living near a 
 railway, or airfield, they get used to the noise very quickly. 
  
 I once bought a unit from "Southern Aviaries" in the UK. "Anti-Moggie", or 
 something. It generated 3000 volt spikes. Cats had difficulty getting used 
 to this. Worked like a dream! (I keep birds).
