*** Quoting Nancy Backus from a message to Mike Roberts ***               NB> Well.... we are in the middle of things, now, and there's some wind,        NB> and some rain... not really all that worse from any autumn storm so        NB> far, at least here in the city proper, but the city and and the              I had some really noisy gusts, but It's like You said Nancy.. Pretty mild        compared to what others got.               NB> county have declared states of emergency, and are shutting down        NB> everything for tomorrow... I guess it's worse up on the Lake Ontario        NB> shores, where the lake is being whipped up, though... and I did hear        NB> that some people south of here have already lost power... We shall              I guess the worst was right up on the lakeshore. Our county was prepared and        did a good job. Listening to the scanner made me really appreciate all they        were doing last night. RGE, Police, Fire Depts, and all. It was messier than        was reported on the news, but still a very mellow experience compared to        other parts of the country.               NB> Except that we've already had a number of instances this year of very        NB> high winds and heavy rains... and I'd suspect that most of the dead        NB> or weak branches and trees have already been culled from those              It was the point they kept making about the north winds and the fact that our        trees were not adapted up here for north winds, They were saying that the        root systems here are dug in for west/ south winds. North winds place the        pressure on the weakest part of the trees root system. I did lose branches        but nothing big. It was much milder than some of our winter storms. I was        just very cautious about those huge pines and the north wind. Quite a few        trees did go down, but I think only 1 on a house locally in perinton.               NB> But flooding in lower or poorly drained areas remains a problem,        NB> granted...              You bet! The scanner had many instances on it. Many times You'd hear the        officers call in a report of street flooding and say something like, we have        two foot of water here, didn't have anything here an hour ago. As I am        posting this, I just heard on the radio they have cut the power outtages in        half. They are down to 18,000 now in Monroe County.               NB> We'll all hope that things stay relatively stable despite the storm.        NB> :)              Muchas Gracias! Minor Damage in the city and no deaths due to the storm. In        the shadow of what others have gotten, we were truly blessed here.              Have a Good One!       Mike              --- Telegard v3.09.g2-sp4/mL        * Origin: The Holodeck telnet://holo.homeip.net (1:261/1381)    |
