   The entire War of 1812 story varies 180 degrees depending on whether it's told   
   in the US or Canada. In the US (where I went to elementary and high school)   
   it's a war that the US fought with Britain as a result of British aggressive   
   acts like boarding US ships and forcing sailors into the British navy - and   
   that the US won.   
      
   In Canada, it's more described as a war where an expansionist US tried to   
   invade Canada (in order to annex it) and was beaten back; the US burned York   
   (future Toronto) and in response the British/Canadian forces burned Washington   
   DC. Because US aggression was defeated (and Washington burned), the war was a   
   loss for the US.   
      
   I've learned that when there are multiple explanations for the same set of   
   facts, most often both are correct.
