   The recovery partition contains data used to   
       
   a) Refresh the machine: Recreate factory fresh OS, but keep all your    
   personal data (documents, images, etc). Programs you installed will be    
   removed. You'll have to do some updating, and reinstallation of programs.   
       
   b) Reset the machine: remove everything, including personal files and    
   data, and reinstall Windows. The machine will be like new. You'll have    
   to do major updating, reinstallation of programs, and restoration of    
   personal data folders/files.   
       
   Advice:   
   Before you do anything else, make recovery media, just in case. Then    
   install Macrium or similar, and set up a regular backup/imaging plan    
   (this is where external drives come in handy).   
       
   FWIW, I didn't follow the above advice in the past, which is why I now    
   urge other people to follow it.
