   Hello Alan,

   AZ> English evolved as a Germanic-family language (Anglo-Saxon) that

Yes, the scandinavian languages do also have their roots in the Germanic
family with addition of Latin. Most of these languages have words that
   ultimately are translations from german.

After the WW 2 there has been many words added that originally are
   english.

When I was at school we could choose between german an french as second
foreign language. Since french at that time was considered to be mainly
   a diplomatic language and I didn't foresee a myself as a diplomat I
chose german that was at the time the common language for all technical
printed material used at the technical schools.

AZ> as a result, the words for the farm animals tend to be German/Anglo-
AZ> Saxon while for food tend to be French-derived:

   AZ> Cow vs beef
   AZ> Swine vs pork

Yes that is correct and these days french is also the main language to
describe fine food and recipes thereof.

Please note that finnish is not a scandinavian language but does have
its roots in the finnish/ugrian language family. For that reason it is
also extremely difficult to learn for people of other language families.

   Happy New Year,

   Holger
