(Continued from previous message)              wrong!! Ironically, before I got into ham radio, I got into another       hobby...square dancing. The lady who helped me through lessons, I got       her into ham radio. Sadly, she became a Silent Key nearly 20 years ago.       In the 1940's, she was one of the fast pitch softball players, and from       what I heard, you did NOT want to face her on the pitching mound!!               And, there are a lot of "dancing hams". We'd usually meet at the       National Square Dance Conventions, normally on the same weekend as Field       Day...but we'd pick a simplex frequency on "where to dance, eat,       sightsee, etc."...and even for emergency use...as I had to do near the       end of one of those conventions, using ham radio to save the life of our       shuttle bus driver, who was assaulted by the security guard at the       hotel. When the people said "you saved his life", I replied "this is       what ham radio operators prepare for...emergency communications". What a       plug for the hobby. One of those "dancing hams" is W8VEY, Steve Stoltz.       He said that his callsign stands for "We Ate Very Early Yesterday". I       guess he starves himself the rest of the time (hi hi).               And, as for Field Day, the year it was in Baltimore, there was a       National Guard Armory across the street from my hotel, and a Field Day       site was set up. Had I realized that I could've operated as Third Party       Traffic, even as a Technician Class licensee at the time (I didn't       upgrade to General then to Extra in less than a month in 2007), I       would've gone over to operate a bit.              EV>I will take a look-see to see what that store looks like. Thanks.               They really need a bigger restaurant and more parking. Being right       across the street from Arkansas Tech University, some days, they do a       "land office business", and it's hard to get a table...never mind a       parking space...especially if a bus is on the property.              EV>Some folks are on a regular schedule, I'm a ir-regular eater.       EV>You can tell that I've never been in a Food Fight just by looking at me       EV>'cuz it's against "MY RELIGION" to waste food.               There's a door on the BBS called "Food Wars"...I need to play that one       again. So many doors, so little time. :P              EV>I think of Alan Sherman(sp?) the comedian saying he was told by his Mom       EV>about all the starving people in other countries when he was a kid,       EV>so he decided to eat all that he could to help those poor folks.              EV>I liked his Camp Granada story (Song) much better though.               Never heard of him.              Daryl              ---        þ OLX 1.53 þ If flying's safe, why is the airport called the terminal?                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                               --- Virtual Advanced Ver 2 for DOS         * ORIGIN: The Thunderbolt BBS - wx1der.dyndns.org (1:19/33)    |
