     I've been runnign windows 8 on 3 machines for a long time now, and I   
   find it's very stable.  It's also quite fast.  You can turn off the   
   metro start menu and have a classic one with a little freeware tool.   
      
     Turn off all those other features and it's just a faster version of   
   windows.    I still wish OS/2 had won the OS war, but it didn't   
   so I make do with what works and causes me the least amount of work.
