   I think ANSI display speed drove the modem speed wars more than raw   
   transfer rates. Nothing like watching 10 screens' worth of ANSI at 9600 bps   
   because your off-brand modem wouldn't negotiate a decent connection or you   
   were pushing bits through a crappy UART.   :)
