It's raining here, which       dropped us out of the 35-37C heat wave we've had.              RN> When I first started out in Fidonet as a user and then a node, I had       RN> but 384K of RAM, which, oddly enough, was tne number of the net I       RN> belonged. My original address was 1:384/6. I had no hard drive and       RN> a 2-diskette system.               HG> As you may understand I skipped the IT-era and also the 300 bps        HG> modems. I started with a 1200 modem that very soon was replaced by        HG> a 2400 one.               If done right, we were able to squeeze 400+ out of that modem. Whoopie! (-:              RN> ............ One had to place "=X" after the filename one was       RN> getting or the download you received wasn't exactly what you       RN> expected.               HG> I don't recall having such problems. I finally stuck with Telix as        HG> modem and I still miss it. It was very clever in that it named the        HG> QWK-packets with a new suffix if there were earlier packets from        HG> the same host B4. PCBoard doesn't do that :o(              That's probably because you didn't begin with a very rudimentary terminal       program like the one I began with. Then along came SmartCom, Crosstalk,       PC-Talk, and some others and the "=X" could be dropped. I finally settled on       Qmodem and by then I had a 1200 baud modem. I remember in our net we were       worried about the CRC errors which could occur at that speed. Look at us now.               HG> It won't be free of course if I have to buy a modern machine        HG> though.              I know mine wasn't, but I like to buy the parts separately and put them       together myself. Less expensive that way.              RN> And if you have to buy W10, the Home version is $119.99 and the Pro       RN> version is $199.99. I don't like psychological pricing.               HG> And to that has to be addad a more modern computer to be able to        HG> install that.              Makes one wonder when enough is going to be enough. I don't think it ever       will be.               HG> Have a nice day,              You too.                     Regards,              Roger        --- timEd/386 1.10.y2k+        * Origin: NCS BBS - Houma, LoUiSiAna - (1:3828/7)    |
