Holger,               EV> I watch the screen when I turn the xp box on.               EV> I panic when I see an extra SCSI device number in the start up list        EV> and hold the power button until the lights go out, then I turn it on        EV> again.               HG> Why do you panic?              That is just the way I am when I see something unexpected on my screen.       -snip-        EV> I see this extra device number show up once a week at least, when        EV> the xp box is turned on.               HG> Does that extra drive displayed do any harm if you let the        HG> machine boot with that number displayed?              I don't want to take a chance with a UNKNOWN.               HG> What I find odd is that the SyQuest drive is shown as #0.        HG> Usually drive 0 is the boot drive and in a mixed IDE / SCSI        HG> setup that is always C: on an IDE drive.              My boot drive isn't a SCSI drive so the SCSI Adapter isn't the first to       be used on boot.       -snip-        EV> Is there any place on the internet that You can give me to learn        EV> about SCSI stuff?               EV> Off the top of my head I think the Adapter is made by Advance.               HG> Maybe the name is Adaptec. I've never heard of SCSI drivers        HG> made by Advance. When you buy an Adaptec SCSI controller you        HG> also receive three books describing various drivers and uses        HG> but I don't recall that there is any SCSI tutorial.              No, its not Adaptec unless Adaptec bought out Advanced System Products.               HG> I know that the SCSI controller you have is a very simple one        HG> intended just for a SyQuest drive, not a general purpose        HG> controller.              I think the adapter is at least equal to Adaptec SCSI adapters since I       see the numbers 0 and 7 when the adapter starts up.       I'm fairly sure this adapter would accept 6 more SCSI devices if I set       them to any of the 1 through 6 unused numbers.               HG> OTOH, I suppose you don't need a tutorial to use IDE        HG> controllers for your HDDs.              I read all I can about all of this computer stuff, retaining what I had       read is another thing.              I asked Mark if He knew of a web site that I could learn from.              I do read lots of Wikipedia pages, and that's O.K. up to a point since       the pages are written by volunteers, and sometimes what I read there       isn't what I know to be true.              I can't remember what Wiki Page it was that I was reading one time that       caused me to Join Wikipedia so I could Edit something I knew was       incorrect.              The page was about Telegraphy and when I logged on and tried to enter       my correction I got a message that the article couldn't be edited for       several weeks, and when several weeks had passed I forgot what page it       was that I wanted to help make clearer to those who read it.              That was the only time I tried editing a Wiki article, and that was a       very long time ago.              I also like reading articles on the internet from people whose business       is KNOWING what they are writing because they KNOW what they write       about.       I'm not one of those though.              I have learned a lot from Links that I've seen in BBS messages, and I       post Links when I think it would be of help to someone reading it.              There is a lot of things that computers do that I've tried to find out       what they are doing when they do what they do.       73              ... No one has to pay me to be good. I'm good for nothing.       --- MultiMail/MS-DOS v0.49       --- SBBSecho 2.12-Linux        * Origin: telnet & http://cco.ath.cx - Dial-Up: 502-875-8938 (1:2320/105.1)    |
