HG>Hi Daryl,              Hi, Holger...              HG>DS> Nowadays, kids are too into their iPads and tablets. You can't       HG>DS> interest them in ANY hobby...BBSing, ham radio, or otherwise.              HG>Yes I know, they wouldn't be able to live without their toy(s).               It's funny how some have brought a new "toy" to a ham radio meeting,       or to a mini Field Day event, and nearly every other ham just goes       "ga-ga" over it. :P              HG>Well, there's a better way (in my opinion).              HG>There are now transceivers available from various manufacturers that       HG>have detachable front panels so that you can install the transceiver       HG>anywhere and control/use any mode of it by remote control and also       HG>control a beam antenna and antenna switching over the internet.               The thing is, being on a fixed income, with numerous medical expenses       (not to mention doing all the driving and many other things for my       elderly Mom), that cuts down on extra cash for "toys". I could use that       RemoteHams deal, but with not resting well at night, then out with my       Mom during the day on errands, then my ham radio nets at night (never       mind work on the BBS), I really don't have time for HF...remotely or       otherwise. The only time I'm "on the air" is for nets.              HG>I'm however allowed a wire antenna or two and a 144 MHz beam on top of       HG>the apartment house and tie point for the wire antenna at a neighboring       HG>house. A couple of sloping 80m dipole legs help guy my antenna mast.               You're lucky...we can't even consider those options where I'm at.       They're going to be doing multiple inspections of every apartment next       week...and because you can't "set a time", you don't know when they'll       show up. While I have an alarm system and renters insurance, I don't       want my stuff "walking off".               The thing is, they won't do "random drug testing", because of "privacy       issues"...but that's the only way they're going to weed out the "drug       heads" out here. The management has a copy of ALL of my medications,       conditions, surgeries, procedures, etc. -- as I WANT them to know my       condition.               In short, I'm just a decrepit old fart...but at least with turning       double nickels soon, I can get senior citizen discounts at more places       in the area. |
