In a message dated 03-08-15, Daryl Stout said to Holger Granholm:              Hi Daryl,              DS> Nowadays, kids are too into their iPads and tablets. You can't       DS> interest them in ANY hobby...BBSing, ham radio, or otherwise.              Yes I know, they wouldn't be able to live without their toy(s).              DS> The nice thing is that with my laptop, a wi-fi card, an external       DS> monitor, DV Dongle (D-Star), the programs of D-Rats, Echolink, and       DS> Outpost, plus a desktop mic and speakers, I can do a demo of Packet       DS> (via telnet), Echolink, D-Star, and D-Rats, virtually anywhere...and              Well, there's a better way (in my opinion).              There are now transceivers available from various manufacturers that       have detachable front panels so that you can install the transceiver       anywhere and control/use any mode of it by remote control and also       control a beam antenna and antenna switching over the internet.              To my knowledge the best remote control unit is the "Remote Rig" made       in Sweden.              Many hams have their station installed in a shed or barn at some farm       or in their summer cottage. There are two living here on the Aland       Islands and many in cities across the world. Some even operate a remote       rig in other countries.              I have my VHF/UHF/SHF station installed in a caravan (not motorized)       on a hill abt 10 km from home. When I installed it there wasn't any       electical power available there so I run a petrol generator to give me       that juice.              I'm however allowed a wire antenna or two and a 144 MHz beam on top of       the apartment house and tie point for the wire antenna at a neighboring       house. A couple of sloping 80m dipole legs help guy my antenna mast.              CU L8ER, Sam, OH0NC              aka Holger              ---        þ MR/2 2.30 þ Aland Islands / 60 degrees North / 20 degrees East        * Origin: Coming to you from the Sunny Aland Islands.
