Ed,              EV>There was a message in this months telephone bill about the cost of       EV>DSL service would go up 3 bucks to make the cost 34 bucks/Month for it.               Big business is just greedy...pure and simple. No matter how many time       I go to the Post Office, the grocery store, the bank, etc. -- you may       have a huge line of customers, and you're lucky if more than one cash       register/bank teller, etc. is available.              EV>Me thinks the coming increase next month may have had something to do       EV>with the F.C.C.'s decision today about Net Neutrality, and them not       EV>being able to accept payments from places wanting higher speeds for       EV>their pages anymore.               IMO, it should be on a level playing field, speed wise. A surprising       number of people are still on dial-up, or they have a slow computer;       because they live in rural areas, or they can't afford a newer, faster       computer (this is particularly true in rural areas of Arkansas).               I got a note the other day, noting "the website is dead"...absent of       things like videos, audios, cascading style sheets, etc. I told him that       my HTML knowledge is VERY BASIC...just as the fact that while I can       write a batchfile for the BBS, my programming ends at setting the clock       on the microwave oven. :P               I told them the organization has 3 options:              1) If you go to the fancy, loaded website format ONLY, you have to find       a brand new webmaster, who will have to build the site from scratch.       But, by doing so, you ALIENATE all those users still on dial-up       internet, with slow computers, or those who may be visually impaired who       have to use speech synthesizers to read a page. These will visit a       "fancy site" ONLY ONCE, and NEVER RETURN...not to mention telling others       "what a lousy site it is". Word of mouth can be both a blessing and a       curse.              2) If you keep the current format, while it may alienate those wanting       fancy stuff, those who aren't as fortunate, with their internet       connection or computer hardware, are able to keep viewing the site.              3) Combine options 1 and 2 -- get a second webmaster for the fancy site,       and I'll maintain the "basic site". I can put a basic link page on the       front end, to direct people to the one desired.               I also noted that while I pay for the current domain, its fees, and       features...a new domain would need to be obtained, and the new       webmaster, would have to take care of that sites upkeep, fees, and       features.               The thing is, you have so many people who want the GLORY...but they do       NOT want the gall of the time, effort, work, and cost. The same applies       to doing things with a ham radio or other group club, a BBS, etc. With       the ham radio club, it's like pulling teeth to get someone to do Net       Control, work at a hamfest, or even be a club officer. When they       complain about the way things are done, and you ask if THEY want to do       it, nearly always, they will BACKPEDAL, and say "No way".              Daryl              ---        þ OLX 1.53 þ I watch what I eat...from the plate to the mouth.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                           --- Virtual Advanced Ver 2 for DOS         * Origin: The Thunderbolt BBS (1:19/33)    |
