   Howdy! Again Mark,

BR> It simply means when DHCP assigns that MAC an IP it's matched to

EV> My MAC has 6 groups and one of them is over 255,

ml> what do you mean "over 255"?? MACs are 6 groups of 2 characters
ml> 0-9a-f... if you are seeing 6 groups with 4 characters of
ml> 0-9a-f, then you are seeing an IPv6 address... both generally
ml> use the ':' (colon) character to split the groups...

I was confused again, I was thinking that a Hex Number in the MAC
Address that had two letters, was greater than 255, DUH, I forgot
255 is Hex FF, what I saw was something like BD in the MAC Address.
Sorry - I guess I'll never get close to becoming Mister Know-It-All.

EV> I don't think the XP box would like one of the numbers in the IP
EV> Address being 256 or over?

ml> if it was coded correctly, modulo (aka clock) arithmetic would

ml> 10... in other words, they would wrap back to zero each time
ml> the passed 255... this is also known as remainder arithmetic ;)

   Thanks for that.

EV> I can't remember the name right now, but remember reading about
EV> that in a Kim Komando newsletter some time ago.

    BR> Sounds like a Proxy server or something {shrug}

EV> I looked it up, it is called OPENDNS.
EV> I'd still think BELL TEL wouldn't like my changing the DNS
    EV> settings.???

ml> they can't stop you... the best they can do is to block access
ml> to external (outside their network) DNS servers... i never use
ml> my ISP's DNS servers... i always use one of the groups of
ml> public DNS servers... i don't use opendns because of their
ml> filtering of certain addresses and/or domains... if i want
ml> something filtered, i'll do it myself so that i know that it is
ml> done properly and by my standards ;)

Looks like I got another Search to do to see about 'Public DNS Servers'
and if I would be interested in them.
Probably not, because I don't run any servers here.

EV> I do apprciate all the help everyone is giving me.

EV> Last night before I switched from the Limited Users Account to a
EV> Admin Account, I unplugged the CAT-5 wire from the back of the XP
EV> box, and while in the Admin Account I plugged it back in and saw a
EV> strange mix of numbers in the IP Address.

ml> "strange mix"?? can you provide an example? it may be that you
ml> were seeing what's known as a local-link address... they start
    ml> with 169...

Yes!, it did start with 169.
Does a Local-LInk-Address of 169 settle down to a 192 number if left
   alone? Thanks.

EV> After playing with it a while, I right-clicked the LAN icon on the
EV> Network Connection page in CP and Disabled the LAN, and then
EV> Enabled the LAN a short time later, and lo and behold it gave me a
EV> x.x.x.100 IP Address in the Status window. It sure made me happy
EV> seeing that dot 100 and now Wallwatcher and Getlog are working as
    EV> they should.

ml> basically what you did was to force your networking to drop the
ml> existing lease and then request a new one from the DHCP server
    ml> in your modem/router thingee...

Yep, but I 'had' to open a Admin Account to do that procedure.
I ain't figured out how to get the other Control Panel options to be
put on my XP desktop so I can right-click - RunAs... on it as I did
for the Clock Option, when I want to see the Seconds display in the
   Clock window.

C:\windows\system32\timedate.cpl is what the shortcut Properties are
set at, and I use that icon when I want to see the Computer Clock Time
so I can adjust a portable clock in my room and carry it around the
house to set my clocks to the correct time.
