   I'm assuming it's an Android smartphone (rather than an older 'feature phone'   
   with proprietary software) and he's using a (more or less) generic Android   
   email app...   
      
   As you describe, the word Inbox appears at the top of the screen.... with a   
   finger, swipe from the left-edge of the screen towards the centre... you   
   should see a list of mail folders, Outbox, Drafts, Trash, Spam, etc. Tap on   
   Outbox.   
      
   To get back to the Inbox, repeat the swipe from the left edge.
