   True.

You didn't buy a computer back in the before IBM XT days where the OS
   was in ROM?

The OS on the Commodore 64 was preinstalled in ROM.

When I ordered the 486 I told the guy I wanted MS DOS 5.0 because I've
learned it was much better than their Version 4.1 , and I asked for a
set of Windows 3.1 disks that I could install whenever I wanted to play
   with it.

Before I got this XP box a fellow I worked with gave me his 'old' W95
   Gateway 2000 when I bought a W98 box.
Later I put W98SE on it 'all by myself'.

But I never BUILT a Computer from scratch.
I think I could, but never had the occasion (or $$$$'s or desire) to do
   it.
