   Keeping a cartridge in the drive should not be neccessary. The BIOS   
   detects drives attached on bootup with or withouht media in them and   
   they should show up in My Computer.   
   As an example my Card Reader shows up as 5 drive letters even with no   
   medium plugged in.   
   My old long gone SCSI Zip Drive when I had it installed would show up   
   with no disk inserted.
