     UPS == Uninterruptible Power Supply   
      
   a Backup Power Source is something that /comes online/ only when power is   
   beyond the upper or lower limits set in the device... eg: outtage, brownout,   
   over-voltage...   
      
   a UPS handles all of these but it is online all the time providing filtering   
   of the line as well as these other services... some UPSes DO have relays in   
   them for when they switch to their batteries... other UPSes choose to use   
   solid-state relays for their switching... all of my APC UPSes have relays and   
   always have had them...
