   My neighbour says he has seen simular happen using Firefox to a GUI editor -   
   didn't say which one - and he figures it might be MS fonts.  I tried   
   converting CP437 to utf8 but that yeilded different weird characters such as   
   Japanese yen and British pound so I am guessing one of the CP12xx's may have   
   worked.

   Agreed.  I cut and pasted from the source url you posted using a text browser   
   (links) and didn't have to convert anything.  They show up as ascii which   
   works out best methinks since as is they work on the commandline without   
   filtering.   
      
   Also this echo needed the extra traffic.  ;-)
