   I think it's an interesting idea, dealing with the Federation at the   
   fringes. There's a series of books called "Star Trek: Vanguard" that   
   have to do with a federation space station at the edge of Tholian   
   space. It feels like DS9 on a much larger scale.   
      
   It's set in the TOS era. There's lots of references and some crossover   
   that makes it an entertaining read - and there's something like 10 books   
   in the series written by a couple of authors.
