   It's not discussed in the episode,   
   but I'm sure that 23rd century medical technology could have kept her    
   alive on life support while McCoy figured out what to do with her.  Even    
   today, a tracheotomy could get oxygen into her lungs and so on.   
      
   They were able to keep Capt. Pike alive, despite the fact that virtually    
   his entire body south of his neck was useless.
