But Star Trek was supposed to be different from past science
fiction...more intelligent, fewer "monsters." Any number of episodes
would have been suitable for a premiere, especially "Where No Man Has
   Gone Before."

But NBC chose "The Man Trap" BECAUSE it looked (to them) like old-style
science fiction which defeated the whole purpose of this new science
   fiction series.

"The Man Trap" would have been fine as the fifth episode broadcast, just
   not the premiere.
