I'm guessing that "sledgehammers" refers to the way that B&B and the
writers have of getting past things that would have made their current
episode storyline impossible (e.g. the transporter not scanning those
arriving and departing), and "monkeys flinging poo" would be the
writers. They throw in a technobabble malfunction or exception, and off
they go writing any silly old shit. They don't take the story
seriously. It's only a paycheck, and as long as they can fool most fans
(bringing in good box office $ and good ratings), they're OK with that.
Trouble is, I'm not, and that's a major reason I've become much less of
a Trek fan since TNG ended. Hell, I didn't even see the new movie 'til
   it came out on DVD.

Back in the ST-II thru ST-IV movie days, I'd have been there on opening
day or at least within a week. When they come out with the next Trek
movie, I'll again be waiting for the DVD. No rush.
