   If "Star Trek" takes place in our universe (when "Star Wars" was   
   released in 1977) then it could be a robot someone made to look like   
   R2-D2.  I would assume that people traveling in outer space would have   
   a fondness for sci-fi films of the past, which "Star Wars" would be in   
   the 23rd century, and who knows what the merchandising will look like   
   by then?  Can we get a close-up to see if it has "Genuine R2-D2   
   Replica - (c) and (tm) LucasFilm 2233" stamped on it?   
      
   Of course this means that TOS did not exist from 1966 to 1969, but if   
   TAS is not canon then in Star Trek's year 1973 there was a very   
   prophetic animated show on NBC's Saturday morning line-up. ;-)
