Commodore was a big name in computers, selling the hugely successful
Commodore 64. Atari was known primarily as a game system and never was
taken seriously by computer hobbyists, fairly or not. Atari was trying
to graduate from game consoles to the home computer market already
dominated by Commodore. The home computer market was Commodore's to
   lose, and they lost it.
