   But then how do you explain Jack Tramiel failing to make the Atari ST   
   a success?   
   Really, the failure of both the Amiga and the Atari ST, whatever the   
   failings of Commodore and Atari might have been, had a simple   
   explanation, consisting of two factors:   
   1) The IBM PC and its clones being the standard;   
   2) Apple's protection of its intellectual property related to the GUI   
   - which Microsoft *licensed* so it could make Windows.   
   So the Amiga and the ST had to be careful to avoid being too Mac-like,   
   thus limiting the usability of their GUI, but more importantly, PC   
   clones were cheap enough that, given the large amount of software for   
   them, other alternatives were left in the dust.
