   Perhaps it's because they had hoped to focus on each of the minor actors    
   in a rotating way, similar to the "centric" episodes on today's "Lost."   
      
   You saw some of that in season 1:  "Charlie X" focused on Yeoman Rand,    
   for example.  And "Naked Time" had a big part for Sulu.   
      
   But Shatner had written memos to the producers "reminding" them that the    
   show "has to center around Captain Kirk and his decisions."   
      
   And as the series continued, the show focused more and more on the    
   Kirk-Spock-McCoy troika.
