Currency is CONSENSUS no matter what backs it up. Be it gold or anything
   else.

Even when money was "backed" by gold there NEVER was enough gold in reserve
to back more than 10% of the money in circulation. Why? Because gold
backing money is nothing but using gold as a percentage surety. The gold
was nothing but insurance reserves held to guarantee a run on the banks.
That's all the gold was and it was never anything but that.
