   I found him annoying too, but not terribly so.  And I found him a   
   welcome diversion from the constant drumbeat that the Enterprise had   
   the best of everything.  The best Captain and the best First Officer,   
   and the best Medical Officer, yada, yada, yada.  It was a nod to   
   believability that they had at least one important character who was a   
   screwup.
