   Technically speaking, that isn't actually the reason why inbreeding is   
   bad.   
   Basically, every one of us has genes for dozens of lethal genetic   
   disorders. But they're all recessive, which is why we aren't dead.   
   And the same applies for most of us to serious but not lethal genetic   
   disorders.   
   The human genome is pretty big, though, so when two unrelated people   
   marry, almost all of the time, while both partners have perhaps   
   hundreds of recessives for serious genetic defects, not one of them is   
   the same as one the partner also has.   
   Radiation causes abnormal chromosomes. Incest lets matching pairs of   
   abnormal chromosomes to get together, causing death and illness from   
   genes that were already there.
