What has 'business sense' got to do with it? Are you suggesting that people
are going to stop seeing movies unless the popular ones win more awards?

Box Office already rewards the popular movies. The Academy Awards (and lots
of other statue hand-out'ers) reward shows of 'merit'. The result for the
industry is that both sides of the bread get buttered and everyone wins.

The movie goers know the score. If they want to watch action, explosions,
sexy people, funny stuff, baby bottle pops, etc... they can go see the
movies with the bigger box office. if they want to watch quirky, thought
provoking, old farts, slice of life, molasses, etc... they can go see movies
   with the large awards mantle.
