   Yeah, it would have been perfectly simple to explain it but they never   
   do.  I got it because I read the novelization before I saw the movie,

   Not that it has ANYTHING to do with the plot, anyway, it just got   
   tossed in because Gene got off on that kind of thing.  The Oath of   
   Celibacy thing was kind of ridiculous.  The problem with her is not   
   what she does in her spare time, it's the effect she has on her crew   
   members in work situations (as the scene with Sulu showed).  If she's   
   going to serve on the Enterprise, either she should be wearing an   
   environmental suit, or her crewmates should have clothes pins on their   
   noses.   
   Red Dwarf did a much better job on this theme with their "Sexual   
   Magnetism Virus".
