Hah. Okay, now you're making me google.

Wiki says she was written out (not her choice) and Stewart was puzzled
as to why and was the one that got her back; so, same as he ruined the
writing staff, he crippled the acting pool.

Memory Alpha says the executive producers got rid of her (not her
   choice).

in 2006 she did a series of commercials for MicroSoft, so she continues
to be on the side of unrepentant evil.

http://en.allexperts.com has a completely innaccurate article saying it
was her choice, and also claiming she did bit parts on TNG throughout
the second season; clearly the writer "Shelley" is on crack.

Two odd tidbits from a raving fan site for McMuffin:

   http://www.northco.net/~crusher/history2.html

"The real reason Gates left is because she was getting sexually harassed
by Maurice Hurley. She told Roddenberry it was him or her and for some
reason they picked him. So she left, but they realized it sucked w/o
her, and asked her to return. She agreed, but only if Hurley left. If
you notice, Hurley's name is present on the credits for all 1st and 2nd
season eps, but absent after that."

   and

"when I attended a convention with Gates McFadden in Kansas City, she
refused to talk about it. All she would say was that "Some people didn't
   like me.""

Hey, even Gates says Crusher is incompetent!

The running joke around the set has always been, 'Is Beverly on the ship
because she's sleeping with the captain?! (Laughter) And the reason she
doesn't have her medical diplomas up on the wall is because she didn't
really get them!' Usually, when there's a guest star that, for whatever
reason, is on the medical table, one member of the cast will say,
'Listen, sorry you're being treated by Bev-you might not make it!' "
   said by Gates

   So to sum up:

Gates left not by her own choice
   Crusher is incompetent
Gates has a sense of humor about Crusher being incompetent

Tiger Woods has just been named "Athlete of the Year"
