The Mayan calender (when convereted to modern the modern calendar system)
shows dates for thousands of years, but suddenly stops on 21 December,
   2012.

There's also a number of other old beliefs and prophecies, including one
from Nostradamus, that (supposedly) indicate a date around the same time
for "the end of the world".

Even if you believe in such things, then there's arguments as to whether
it literally means "the end of the world" (as in it explodes or something)
or some big disaster that causes major changes, maybe killing off large
numbers of living things (e.g. another smaller "dinosaur extinction"
event) ... of course once we get past those dates with nothing happening,
then two things will definitely happen: many people will try and say that
event X which did happen was what they really meant AND the "end of the
world" event will suddenly get a new date slightly further in the future.

You need to use a really good magnifying glass, and then you'll find it
right next to the "Made in China" stamp. ;-)
