And a weird one it was. Uniform color no longer had anything to do
with division. The rule was just Lieutenant Commander and below wore
gold, Commander and above wore blue. EXCEPT for Ilia, who wore blue
even though she was a Lt. JG, because she photographed better in it.
There were also a few white uniforms, but I'm not sure where they fit
into things. Perhaps they sold the ice cream.
Division was determined by patch color. Everyone had a uniform patch
like in the series, except that they were all the command star. No
planets or curly-cues any more. There was a coloured circle behind
the chevron, and the colour of that identified your division. White
was Command (Kirk, Decker), Orange was Science (Spock), Green was
Medical (McCoy, Chapel). I forget the others, but I'm sure it's all
explained in one of the Marvel Comics.
Communicators were the wrist communicators, of course. And the belt
buckles, which seemed to be merely big and decorative, like something
a truck driver would wear, were actually "Per Scan" units, which
functioned like a diagnostic bed, and constantly sent medical readings
down to Big Brother in Sickbay. (Like many things, the belt buckles
were only explained in the novelization.)
They had three main uniform styles, all in dull pastel. There were
the two piece uniforms with the braid on the sleeve. Also the one
piece jumpsuits, with the braid on the shoulder. And the two piece
short sleeve uniform, for hot days, I guess. Also, a few extras, like
   Kirk's Admiral's Uniform.
They sure had a lot of money to burn for this movie, didn't they?
Then for the next movie, they threw it all out and started over.
