   OK, we all know:   
      
   Gold, star  = command   
   Blue, eye  = sciences   
   Red, curved lightning bolt = engineering & ships services   
      
      
   BUT,   
      
   What were they in the pilots (Cage, WNMHGB)?   
      
   1) I don't see Red anywhere. Apparently there are "Sciences" and "other".   
      
   2) There appears to be no relation between tunic color and insignia:   
      
   (Scotty wore gold,eye although he was obviously performing engineering    
   tasks. )   
      
      
   SO,   
      
   Since the final scheme is redundant; it has two ways to determine department    
   (insignia and color).  Did Roddenberry have some other scheme in mind in the    
   pilot episodes?
