I'm pretty sure it was Twilight Zone. One of the hour long Season 4
episodes. I think the title was just "The Bard". The plot involved
Shakespeare in the present helping the hack writer, and had lots of
little satirical observations on the nature of TV.

I just used that quote because it fit what I was talking about. They
were performing the play "Death of a Scotsman", which takes place in
Egypt, to try to get McAngus killed, by substituting real knives for
the stage knives he gets stabbed with. The Queen and Harry are
watching, the Queen asks what a Scotsman is doing in Egypt in the
first place. Harry doesn't know either, but knows that the play got
good reviews, which is all that matters to him.
It sort of reminded me of how they'd stuck the Azim character into the
Kevin Costner Robin Hood. What's a Muslim warrior doing in the Robin
Hood tales? I don't know, but apparently we're supposed to like it.
The reviewers did. (It sounds like we'll be having the same
discussion about the Thor movie too.)
Usually any time I can come up with a quote from a movie or TV that
fits what I'm posting about, especially from Red Dwarf or Blackadder,
it ends up as a sig.
