   Nobody (at least nobody that's talking) knows for sure. One theory is    
   that since the designer, Andy Probert, designed the ugly thing on his    
   own time (because he hated the TMP ship) that they were having to    
   continue to pay him for the design somehow, and thought they'd destroy    
   it so they could have a new ship done in house that they'd own. That    
   theory has so many holes in it that it's hard to take seriously. I'm    
   guessing that it's more because of Braga's poor writing skills that he    
   (like Gerry Conway) tends to want to kill something and hit the reset    
   button, and he killed everybody and reset it but still killed the ship    
   (and, again, I'm amazed at the incompetence of the end of that film that    
   we don't even known if several of the regulars survived the second    
   crash).
