I got news fer ya: I have written scripts-- some of which have even
been shopped around Tinsel Town (Hollywood) so I do know a little
something about how scripts are written and plot devices. Just
because a script is produced or made into a TV show or film, that
doesn't make it flawless. Somtimes the act of production can make a
near-perfect script turned into crap. And I don't need to list
examples as it would take me a lifetime to list the hundreds or
thousands of scripts turned bad by directors and producers.
I'm not gonna do a recutation of Screenwriting 101. There are almost
as many reasons for plot holes as there are plots. But in this case
it's such a minor thing that it's not really worth crying over, but
that doesn't mean there is no plot hole. When Spock includes Karidian
in the list of four possible people on Tarsus IV, he shouldn't ven
know about Karidian as Kirk didn't want Spock to know a damn thing but
who cares? Other than a few minor flaws, this is an otherwise good
   story.
Good enough for Conscience to be used as the backplot for Avenger. In
the book, we get an explanationation for why Kodos did what he did ("I
was a soldier in a cause!") that ties in nicely with the death of
Sarek, bringing Kirk back from the events of Generations in a tight
TOS/Next Generation, cohesive story, that surprisingly well done.
Shatner wanted Paramount to produce it but Paramount wanted only Next
Gen stories-- which was rather unfortunate since those died a sad and
lonely death at the theaters. ;-)
