They mostly did, but sometimes they got together in the same studio.
Other times, Shatner or Nimoy would just pop a tape in the mail from
wherever they happened to be on tour.
Speaking of which, one thing we ought to mention about TAS is that
Doohan has at least as many lines as Shatner and Nimoy, probably more,
   as he plays almost every male guest character (with a few exceptions;
they did get Stanley Adams, Mark Lenard, and even Ted Knight in for a
role, but most of it is Doohan). Majel and Nichelle do almost every
female role in the whole series. Of the new regular characters, Lt.
Arex and Lt. M'Ress, Doohan plays Arex and Majel plays M'Ress.
The original plan had been to have even Sulu and Uhura played by those
two. Nimoy had believed that everyone was going to play their own
parts, but was shocked when he first came into the studio, that
although Paramount claimed to own the likenesses of Takei and
Nicholas, that they weren't going to play their own roles. (a cost-
saving measure). Nimoy put his foot down and refused to do the show
under those conditions. Apparently Gene asked him if he was insisting
that they appear in every episode, and he said no, only that whenever
they do appear, they should do their own voices. Without Nimoy there
was no show, so George and Nichelle made it on. There wasn't enough
money to bring in Walter Koenig too, which is why Chekov is gone and
replaced by Arex. (Walter got his revenge though, by scripting an
episode which was perhaps TAS's worst). Gene really should have made
the same stand himself, but didn't rock the boat.
