   Because unlike the TV series, the writers had to get Kirk from "repeat    
   offender" in Iowa to captain of the Enterprise in one 2 1/2 hour movie.   
      
   There was no time for a richer backstory like Kirk serving on the    
   Farragut and the Republic, as was the case in TOS.
