   He does sound confused.  It's a little awkward to say "two hundred and   
   four above", when there are no temperatures below zero in Kelvin.  If   
   he'd said centigrade, the range would have been 68-399 Fahrenheit,   
   which would have been quite reasonable (we could just say that they   
   got lucky and avoided extreme heat).   
   On the other hand, this was the pre-internet days, and so if you   
   didn't know how to convert between Fahrenheit and Kelvin off the top   
   of your head, you couldn't just google it.  You'd have to either ask   
   somebody, own an encyclopedia, or make a special trip to the library.   
   My guess would be that Kandel didn't know, didn't want to go to the   
   trouble of finding out, but thought it would sound cool to use Kelvin   
   in the episode, and so just made an educated guess about what a   
   reasonable temperature range might be.
