Physicist Frank Tipler has pointed out that human knowledge is expanding
at a faster rate than the Universe is expanding. Which means that if
our civilization exists long enough, its expanding knowledge base will
eventually "catch up" to the Universe and know everything there is to
   know about the Universe.

And then there will be no further point to exploration or research. We
will have learned all that is learnable (to borrow a phrase from
   ST:TMP).
