   BTW, I suspect the issue has more to do with the serial port / USB adapter   
   (and/or device driver) than the modem. That same modem with a different serial   
   port would probably work fine. I'm not saying there's nothing to be fixed in   
   sexpots (or the Synchronet comio library) to accommodate that serial port. If   
   you could provide details on this USB serial port/adapter (I have a few   
   USRobotics external modems already), I could purchase one for myself and make   
   quicker debug of the issue.
