   I use 4 USR5637 modems connected to a USB hub connected to my PC and they work   
   well. Stupid question, your modem is actually /dev/ttyUSB1 right?   
      
   Are there any switches on your modem? If so you could see if there's one to   
   turn off hardware handshaking. If you're not seeing lights on the modem then   
   it would suggest that DSR/DTR aren't set correctly for you to send to the   
   modem for some reason.   
      
   fwiw, my setserial is slightly different.
