   Hitting Ctrl-Z (while not in an editor), toggles raw I/O mode. When entering a   
   message in raw I/O mode, you get an introduction text like this:   
       Raw message input (2673000 bytes max). Ctrl-Z to save, Ctrl-C to abort.

   I doubt the terminal is a factor.

   Maybe you weren't actually using the internal line editor. Share a screen   
   capture to help us see what you're seeing.
