Gumbo < ngombo @ Mbundu Ctl Afr Bantu : okra
soup thickened with okra, 1805, from Louisiana French, probably ultimately
from Central Bantu dialect (compare Mbundu ngombo "okra"). Also used for "the
creole patois of Louisiana" (1838).

Okra < nkruma @ Akan W Afr Ghana : okra
vegetable cultivated in the East and West Indies and southern U.S., 1670s,
from a West African language (compare Akan nkruma "okra").
