It's funny that after I posted the above message, I went back to writing and
rewrote a scene of boring farms that was almost exactly the same as what I had
before.  Then I took a break, looked at this, and remembered that I said I
wasn't going to do that.
  One more rewrite, coming up!  I guess talking to myself online does some
good after all.
