The Bible itself does not tell the "truth" - the fact that religious zealots
apparently took it on themselves to leave out some stories simply because
they didn't like them would be proof enough of that. The Bible is simply a
collection of stories that have been embelished and altered over the
millennia. You'll find stories in many other culture / religions that have a
basis that are extremely similar, meaning that their possibly was some
original truth way back in time or that each story at least comes form a
singular original source.

It's no different to another mythical story that may or may not have some
sort of real origin, e.g. Robin Hood, King Arthur, aliens visiting ancient
cultures, etc. All have had alterations over the years so that nobody
actually knows what is and isn't real. Hollyweird and the comic book
industry continue the trend by doing silly "remakes" where they make lots of
changes to someone else's story - which is the real "Battlestar Galactica"?
Which is the real "Superman"? Which is the real Robin Hood?
