   Indeed, part of the motivation behind the 140 character limit for twitter is   
   that it was designed deliberately to be easily accessed via SMS, and it is   
   fully integrated so that you can send and receive through SMS.  This has   
   caused headaches for various    
   governments that have tried to block access to twitter, because to fully cut   
   it off requires not only IP type blocking but also SMS blocking, which is   
   somewhat harder to do (if you consider the ability to send and receive SMS   
   internatoinally).
